2020-02-10: Bus Fuel Leak and Spill Cleanup in Spokane

On February 10th, 2020 Pro Enviro was called to the scene of a parked bus at the Spokane Greyhound terminal that had a significant fuel leak. It required a spill cleanup. First, we had to deal with the bus. Once the leak was contained and no longer a hazard, our Pro-Tow 24 Hour Towing division hooked up the bus and removed it from the terminal.

Then Team Pro Enviro got to work cleaning up the mess. First, we used a premium absorbent powder to absorb the majority of the spilled fuel. This product works similar to kitty litter, as most of the pollutant is absorbed and then scooped away.

Once that was cleaned up, we gave it an extra scrub with Gold Crew TC formula. This product is water-based, biodegradable, and works well for spill cleanup of fuel and other vehicle operating fluids. It removes pollutants from the surface and reduces vapors, so it doesn’t wash away into stormwater and pollute waterways.

We completed the spill recovery and left the parking area at the Spokane Greyhound terminal spick and span!

What Causes Fuel Leaks?

In our industry, many of the fuel spills we see are caused by a damaged fuel tank. Often, from an accidental impact. However, sometimes fuel tanks leak for other reasons and require fuel spill cleanup. Sometimes a fuel tank can rust, corrode, and fail if it is really old. Usually, this takes a long time, but in wet or humid climates, the corrosion process accelerates.

More likely, an impact to the fuel tank will cause the leak. Sometimes it doesn’t have to be a significant impact. Even just hitting a pothole or curb can be enough to spring a leak. In many cases, the driver can be unaware of the leak until the vehicle is parked in one place long enough to form a noticeable puddle.

Towing a Bus

A coach bus can weigh up to 48,000 lbs. A bus of this size requires specialized equipment to be towed safely. Team Pro-Tow offers heavy towing services and can handle this kind of weight. Our drivers and operators have been extensively training and can hook up, tow, and de-tach heavy vehicles safely and efficiently. Learn more about our Pro-Tow heavy towing service.
