2023-12-06: How We Handle Hazardous Material Spills

Pro-Enviro offers heavy-truck recovery and response for hazardous material spills 24/7! If your fleet vehicle is in an accident that causes a hazardous spill, we will use our streamlined emergency spill cleanup strategy to clean the mess up safely and responsibly.

In this article, we share more about our process for handling spills of hazardous materials.

Hazardous Materials

In most cases we work on, motor vehicle accidents cause hazardous spills like fuel and oil spills. However, other contaminants can be part of a spill as well. These include hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, coolant and more. Hazardous cargo spills can also include other substances that put people, animals and the environment at risk.

Pro-Enviro’s Strategic Spill Response

There are many steps involved in cleaning up hazardous material spills. We take these steps whether the spill happens on the road, in a ditch, waterway, forest, highway, private property or elsewhere. In each case, only highly trained and experienced professionals can assess the situation and develop a plan that keeps safety at the top of the list while adhering to required government protocols.

When we respond to the scene of a spill, we’ll begin by identifying the materials involved. Next, we’ll determine the amount of materials potentially contaminating the environment. From there, we carry out a detailed analysis of the hazards that could be associated with the material spill — this includes the risk to the public, property, and the environment.

After that, our team will determine the pathway the spilled materials may follow. For example, will spilled materials leak into the air, land, surface waters, or groundwater? The next important step is to devise a plan to contain and control the spill, reduce its impact, or prevent further release.

Then, with proper safety measures in place, we’ll implement this plan and begin the spill cleanup. We will also use very specific equipment, materials, and supplies to do so.

Spill Disposal

Any hazardous material spills are considered contaminated and must be disposed of safely and correctly once the spill cleanup is complete. Pro-Enviro will work with all first responders at the scene of the accident, as we have the training or appropriate licenses to dispose of hazardous waste. We’ll also work with all necessary agencies, on and off-site, including the Department of Transportation, Washington State Patrol, environmental protection agencies, and others.

Then, we will always ensure these materials are disposed of safely and only in ways compliant with local regulations.

Pro-Enviro will be there for your truck or fleet in an emergency. Call us to learn more today!
