Serving Washington State and the Pacific Northwest
When a spill happens along a busy roadway, the spill response has to be fast, careful, and compliant. Pro-Enviro by FleetEasy handled a recent spill response in Snoqualmie. Earlier, a damaged tractor-trailer was recovered from the scene, but it had leaked diesel fuel and engine oil into the ditch beside a busy highway. Pro-Enviro was called to perform the spill recovery.
Securing the Area and Assessing the Situation
Our operator arrived near the reported location but had to carefully travel along the shoulder to pinpoint the exact site. Once we found the spill, we set up cones so drivers could see there were workers in the area. It might seem like a simple precaution, but visibility is vital during a diesel fuel spill cleanup close to the road and within a limited space.
After securing the area, the crew surveyed the spill and confirmed the presence of diesel fuel and engine oil. The fluids had spread beyond the roadway and were entering a drainage system that disappeared underground, creating a risk to downstream areas. The operator documented the scene thoroughly, taking photos not only of the spill itself but also of a nearby stream that extended roughly the length of a football field.
Protecting Waterways is Top Priority
As the operator noted in the report, “this fluid was entering into a drainage system that goes underground to an unknown location.” That uncertainty is exactly why spill response in Snoqualmie requires immediate containment to prevent the spill from reaching waterways and causing environmental damage.
Diesel Fuel Spill Cleanup Gets Underway
Absorbent pads were installed at and near the drainage area right away to stop the free flow of fuel and oil. Additional contamination was found in the soil near the roadway, likely left behind during the earlier recovery of a tractor-trailer. First, Team Pro-Enviro excavated the affected soil before continuing with surface cleanup. All impacted dirt and debris were carefully placed into a dump trailer for proper disposal.
Diesel fuel spill cleanup rarely involves just one task. In this case, surface fluids had pooled with water, making separation difficult. While evacuating those fluids, the crew discovered additional engine oil further down the bank in brush-covered areas. The brush had to be pulled back so it could all be removed. This work took time and required patience, especially with rain, wind, and cold weather that day.
Even as conditions worsened, the crew continued focusing on the most heavily impacted zones. Fluids were vacuumed where possible, while absorbent materials were monitored, removed and replaced to capture ongoing runoff. By the end of the job, the vacuum trailer had reached capacity, and the dump trailer was nearly full. Remaining debris was removed by hand to ensure the most critical areas were cleaned up properly and safe from contamination.
Detailed Documentation Ensures Compliant Spill Cleanup
Throughout the cleanup, documentation and communication remained ongoing. Photos were taken to record progress, and updates were shared with the Washington State Department of Ecology contact and the person responsible for the spill. The operator maintained direct communication with the DOE for the entire job, explaining site conditions and sharing every step they took.
This level of coordination is a key part of spill response in Snoqualmie and across Washington State. Diesel fuel spill cleanup is about protecting drainage systems, waterways, and surrounding soil while ensuring the response meets regulations. It helps protect the environment while saving customers from penalties and fees.
Once all target areas were cleaned as thoroughly as possible and absorbents were checked one final time, the crew cleared the scene and returned to the yard.
