Providing cargo recovery and spill response throughout Washington State
When a commercial truck is involved in an accident, the damage can extend far beyond the vehicle itself. Freight can be lost, deliveries disrupted, and valuable products wasted. That's what happened when an accident involving a 53-foot refrigerated tractor-trailer left the trailer too damaged to continue its journey. Inside were about 1,400 boxed watermelons that still had value, even though the trailer could no longer complete its route.
Working together, Pro-Enviro and Pro-Tow, both part of the FleetEasy Company of Family, recovered the cargo and transferred it to another truck for delivery to a food bank. What could have been a significant amount of wasted food instead became an opportunity to support people in need.
Recovering a Damaged 53-Foot Reefer Trailer
The recovery began with a damaged 53-foot refrigerated trailer, commonly called a reefer. The trailer had sustained severe damage in a road accident, including a flat tire and structural problems that caused it to track sideways rather than directly behind the tractor.
This condition, known as crab walking, creates additional challenges during recovery and transport. After arriving at the scene and assessing the trailer, the recovery operator called for backup. With another team member following, the team moved the damaged trailer to FleetEasy's Auburn dispatch location.
According to the operator's account, the team travelled slowly, stopping several times to inspect the tires and monitor the trailer's condition. They also navigated to the next exit to turn around before continuing toward the dispatch yard.
Because the trailer was refrigerated, preserving its remaining cargo was another priority. The reefer unit was left running after the trailer arrived at the yard.
Giving 1,400 Watermelons a Second Chance
Once the damaged trailer arrived at the Auburn dispatch location, the next phase of the operation could begin. The trailer was no longer suitable to continue the delivery, but the watermelon cargo could still be recovered.
The team unloaded the watermelons from the damaged refrigerated trailer into the Auburn bay and reloaded them onto another truck. This allowed the shipment to continue to a food bank rather than being discarded because of the accident.
For businesses transporting food and other perishable products, timely cargo recovery can make a substantial difference. A damaged trailer doesn't necessarily mean the freight inside is unusable. In this case, the result was especially meaningful. The recovered watermelons could help feed local families and individuals instead of becoming food waste.

Cargo Recovery Services That Go Beyond the Tow
As part of the FleetEasy group, Pro-Tow and Pro-Enviro can work together to address different aspects of a commercial vehicle recovery. Pro-Tow brings heavy-duty towing and recovery experience, while Pro-Enviro supports cargo recovery and related cleanup needs.
Depending on the circumstances, cargo recovery services may involve:
-
- Recovery planning
- Cargo unloading and reloading
- Cargo salvage
- Freight transfer coordination
- Damaged trailer recovery
- Cargo spill cleanup
Every recovery is different. The type of freight, extent of vehicle damage, location of the accident and condition of the cargo all influence the response.
Supporting Washington Food Banks This Holiday Season
With the holidays approaching, many families face additional financial pressures. Food banks and community organizations help people access nutritious food, but they rely on donations, volunteers and ongoing community support.
While not every shipment can be salvaged or donated, recovering usable food when it is safe and practical can help reduce waste and support organizations working to address food insecurity. For those living or working near FleetEasy's Auburn and Spokane operations, there are several ways to get involved.
The Auburn Food Bank
The Auburn Food Bank provides food and emergency assistance to people in Auburn and surrounding communities within the Auburn School District. Its programs include food distribution, holiday food baskets and support for families experiencing financial hardship.
Community members and businesses can contribute through financial donations, food drives, food donations or volunteer opportunities.
Second Harvest in Spokane
Second Harvest Inland Northwest helps provide food assistance throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho. The organization also runs a food rescue initiative that redirects surplus food from businesses and other sourcesto people who need it.
Residents and businesses can contribute financially, organize food drives, volunteer, or inquire about donating surplus food.
