When a heavy-duty vehicle breaks down, it can sometimes turn into an environmental emergency. If fluids from an accident or mechanical failure leak, a rapid spill response is required to protect the environment and ensure legal compliance.
Recently, Pro-Enviro by FleetEasy responded to a coolant spill incident involving a 2016 Freightliner Holman welding truck at a Maverik station near Cheney, just outside Spokane. What began as a towing call quickly became a coordinated multi-division response involving Pro-Enviro, Pro-Tow, and Motorplex support teams.
A Major Coolant Spill Near a Drain

When the Pro-Tow operator arrived on scene, it was immediately clear that the situation involved more than a disabled truck. A significant coolant spill had spread through the parking lot, with some of the fluid flowing toward a nearby drain close to the gas station.
Coolant spills can create slippery surfaces, environmental contamination risks, and potential regulatory concerns if fluids enter waterways or drainage systems. Thankfully, the team quickly determined the drain was a catch basin and did not require evacuation or a larger containment response.
The tow truck operator used four bags of absorbent material to begin controlling the leak while additional support was coordinated. Soon after, Pro-Enviro’s crew arrived on scene to safely handle the environmental cleanup and containment.
Coordinated Fleet Vehicle Spill Recovery
While Pro-Enviro focused on spill containment and environmental protection, Pro-Tow worked carefully to stabilize and prepare the welding truck for transport.
Because the vehicle was equipped with a hi-rail system and positioned in a parking lot with uneven dips and tight maneuvering areas, moving the truck safely required careful coordination between crews.
The towing operator had to cage the front drive axle, address a significant air leak, and remove the driveline to carefully hook up and maneuver the truck through the parking lot. Plus, we didn’t want to drag coolant all over the pavement, so we were mindful of the spill cleanup area.
Once stabilized, Pro-Tow transported the Freightliner to Terry’s Truck Center Tank Shop at the customer’s request.

Professional Spill Response Saves the Day
Fleet vehicle spills are not something companies should attempt to handle alone. Even relatively common fluids like coolant can become serious environmental concerns depending on location, weather, drainage systems, and traffic conditions.
Professional spill response teams like Pro-Enviro understand how to:
-
- Contain hazardous and non-hazardous fluids
- Protect nearby storm drains and catch basins
- Reduce environmental impact
- Coordinate safely with towing and repair teams
- Help businesses minimize downtime and liability
- Ensure proper disposal of spill materials and debris
- Ensure documentation and reporting to meet legal requirements
At Pro-Enviro, our crews respond to commercial vehicle spills, industrial fluid releases, fuel leaks, coolant spills, and fleet-related environmental incidents throughout Spokane and surrounding areas.
