When a vehicle spills fuel or oil on a busy highway, fuel spill cleanup is needed fast! Recently, Pro-Enviro by FleetEasy responded to a reported fuel spill on Highway 18 in Federal Way, right on the 142B exit ramp. As a state-wide spill response provider, Pro-Enviro was mobilized to assess the situation, contain the contamination, and restore the affected area with compliant spill cleanup services.
Upon receiving the call, response vehicles were prepared, including a V-Truck and a vacuum trailer. Once the customer was located, we met with the driver, inspected the scene, and created a clear spill cleanup plan. Here’s how we got the job done:
Thoughtful Planning for Every Fuel Spill Cleanup
After speaking directly with the driver and checking out the situation, Pro-Enviro established a step-by-step approach to clean visible contamination and affected road debris. First, we had to remove absorbent materials that the driver had deployed to contain the spill. We bagged those properly for disposal and removed the contaminated roadway material. This ensured loose contaminants were addressed before we started using our own spill response materials.
Surface Cleaning Begins
The operator stated that, “Once that was complete, we applied grease sweep throughout the spill area, swept it thoroughly, and reapplied absorbent as needed until the area was cleaned to satisfaction.”
Using absorbents helps lift the residual fuel from the road’s surface and reduces the risk of tracking contamination outside of the impacted area.
Leaky Tank Needs Fast Thinking
During the cleanup process, the driver moved the truck. The fuel tank was still punctured, so moving the vehicle caused more fuel to leak. We immediately addressed the issue by patching the puncture using putty reinforced with a golf ball.
Team Pro-Enviro treated the newly affected area with TC. The treatment was brushed into the surface and pressure-washed, with the process repeated three to four times to ensure the contamination was fully removed and the area cleaned.
Wrapping up the Spill Response Call
Once the fuel spill cleanup was done, all equipment was gathered and returned to the yard. We always recondition our equipment and restock our supplies in our spill response units, so they are ready to help with another cleanup at any time.
We reported and logged the incident, and in the following days, all waste was manifested correctly in compliance with regulations.
