Offering vehicle fluid spill response in Washington State

When a commercial truck flips, it can bust a leak and create a bigger problem than just the rollover. Diesel spills, hydraulic fluid leaks, and compromised cargo can all pose serious risks to roadways, soil, waterways, and public safety if not properly contained and cleaned.

Pro-Enviro by FleetEasy recently helped with an incident regarding a semi-truck rollover in Auburn, Washington. They assisted Pro-Tow by FleetEasy with the recovery, managed a diesel fuel spill, and supported full scene restoration.

Here’s how we handle spill recoveries after semi-truck accidents.

The Environmental Risk of Diesel Spills in Truck Rollovers

When a semi-truck rolls over, fuel tanks are often compromised. Diesel fuel can leak rapidly, spreading across pavement and potentially seeping into soil or nearby drainage systems. Even small releases can create long-term environmental damage if not properly contained.

Diesel is particularly concerning because it contains hydrocarbons that can contaminate soil and water sources. It also creates slippery road conditions, increasing the risk of secondary collisions if not addressed quickly.

In this Auburn incident, the diesel spill occurred when the semi-truck went down. Fortunately, absorbent was put down before we arrived, containing the bulk of the spill.

Pro-Enviro Arrives on Scene

Pro-Enviro spill response

When Pro-Enviro arrived on scene, the first priority was to assess the extent of the spill and prevent further spread. This included identifying and evaluating affected roadway areas, and determining whether the fuel had migrated toward storm drains or soil.

Specialized absorbent materials, containment booms, and environmental protection tools are used to stop the spread of diesel and begin recovery.

Coordinating Environmental Response With Heavy-Duty Recovery

One of the most important aspects of this incident was coordination between Pro-Enviro and the heavy-duty recovery team. While Pro-Tow managed the uprighting of the overturned semi and load recovery process, Pro-Enviro focused on stabilizing the environmental conditions around the vehicle.

This collaborative response ensured that cleanup and recovery operations did not interfere with one another. It also reduced overall roadway closure time by allowing both teams to work simultaneously, getting the job done. As the trailer was carefully lifted and eventually removed, Pro-Enviro continued monitoring for secondary leaks and ensuring contaminated areas were properly contained.

Load Recovery and Contaminated Materials Handling

In addition to the diesel spill, the rollover resulted in cargo disruption that required careful handling during recovery. When freight becomes unstable or exposed during a spill event, it can no longer be treated as standard cargo.

Pro-Enviro assists in these situations by supporting the safe identification, containment, and removal of potentially contaminated materials. This ensures that affected goods are handled in accordance with environmental and safety guidelines.

Once the trailer was stabilized and uprighted, recovery teams worked to remove damaged freight while Pro-Enviro managed surrounding environmental protection measures.

Environmental Cleanup

After the vehicle was removed, Pro-Enviro began the full cleanup process. This included removing diesel-contaminated absorbent materials, treating affected pavement areas, and ensuring that no leftover contamination was left behind.

Depending on the severity of a spill, remediation may also involve soil sampling and lab testing.
