On May 29, 2020, After receiving a call about an over-turned heavy-duty truck and trailer with hydraulic fluid leaking, Team Pro-Enviro and Team Pro-Tow raced to the scene! We arrived quickly with a spill-response motor vehicle and other equipment to assess the situation and assist in this equipment recovery.
The Dangers of Hydraulic Fluid
Hydraulic fluid is one of the most common vehicle fluids spilled on the road after an accident. Unfortunately, it is both toxic and flammable. That means when there’s a leak, this creates a huge environmental issue. In addition, touching hydraulic fluid can cause burns to the skin and even weakness in the hands. Beyond damage to the environment, hydraulic leakage also brings with it the risk of fires. That’s why quick and proper hydraulic fluid recovery is so important.
Spill Recovery
First and foremost, Pro-Enviro had to contain the truck’s spill to ensure it wouldn’t spread any further. From there, Pro-Tow came in to perform the equipment recovery. First, we carefully rigged the truck and trailer and lifted both units up the embankment and under the overhead powerlines. Read more about safe accident recovery when working near powerlines.
As soon as we cleared those lines, we installed rigging for uprighting the casualties. Finally, we separated the tractor from the trailer, loaded it onto a flatbed and towed it away so Pro-Enviro could work on the hydraulic fluid recovery.
Cleanup and Sign Off
Pro-Enviro had to do further assessments of the spill and take soil samples. We cleaned all remaining debris, finished the hydraulic fluid recovery and sent soil samples to the laboratory for inspection. Sending off those samples, making the report, and reconditioning our equipment were the final steps for Pro-Enviro in another successful spill recovery!
