2020-08-05: Wild West On SR167 – Spill Recovery After Truck and Trailer Collision

In this incident on August 5th, 2020, Pro-Enviro responded to an emergency dispatch regarding a semi-truck and semi-trailer blocking the SR167. The truck was leaking fuel as well, but Team Pro-Enviro was quick to respond. We arrived on the scene with two heavy-duty trucks and immediately assessed the situation and reported to the incident command post.

The semi-truck and trailer had impacted a center jersey barrier and was now resting against it. The crash had caused a large amount of fuel to spill onto the road, with more leaking from the truck. Immediate spill recovery was required. We needed special equipment for this task and quickly requested environmental spill response vehicles and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER).

Truck Accident Recovery Process

After our team performed temporary fuel spill containment measures, we turned to the semi-truck and trailer recovery. First, we repositioned the truck for safe hookup and transport using an HD rotating crane style wrecker. We then separated the tractor and the trailer to safely transport the two separately. The tractor’s damage was excessive, so our expert Pro-Enviro team used alternative loading and chain connection methods to make the transport safer.

Focusing On Spill Recovery

During the truck accident recovery, our team continued to perform temporary fuel spill containment measures. Once the trailer was hooked up, we did an emergency pump-off to contain and remove the fuel leaking from the damaged semi-truck. We placed this collected fuel in a second containment container.

After the truck was safely relocated, we focused on the roadside cleanup required to complete the spill recovery job. The work needed extra equipment and more help to handle. Our team quickly and efficiently cleaned up all the debris and collected the spilled fuel on the road. As an added safety measure, a secondary containment measure was placed to protect the stormwater from any fuel.

Another Safe Cleanup

With the roads safe for travel once again, the semi-truck and trailer were transported to a secure storage yard. All the equipment was reconditioned so that everything was ready for the next spill recovery call. The required paperwork was filled out, and the all-clear call was given. Another truck accident recovery safely handled by our professional Pro-Enviro team!
